Uninsured Drivers Cost to Society
Continuous Insurance Enforcement to help protect Honest Drivers from increasing insurance Costs.
Every year the UK insurance Industry pays out approximately £500m in claims relating to uninsured driving. The cost is ultimately passed on to honest motorists through insurance premiums.
- Uninsured Drivers are:
- 3 Times more likely to have been convicted of driving without due care and attention
- 6 Times more likely to drive an unsafe vehicle
- 9 Times more likely to be involved in a collision
- 10 Times more likely to have a drink driving conviction
Changes:
From January 2011 the new law gives the DVLA more power to combat the problem of uninsured vehicles. Before this date, it used to be an offence to use a vehicle without insurance but now it will also be an offence, with severe penalties attached, to keep a vehicle without appropriate motor insurance unless a Statutory off Road Notification (SORN) has been made.
